Dr. Aftab Uddin is a medical graduate trained overseas (Australia, UK and USA) in public health and medical education, and acquired various skills and competencies to design, develop, implement, manage, and lead initiatives for developing health human resources (HRH), clinical services operations including quality improvement initiatives, and public health services and research in Bangladesh. For almost the last four decades, he worked in multiple settings and contexts including academia (medical schools and universities) where he taught and mentored students and interns, developed staff and faculty, and conducted and supervised research initiatives. Outside Academia, his work experience has been versatile with the Ministry of Health, Bangladesh, UN Agencies (e.g. WHO and UNICEF), NGOs, and Donors (e.g. USAID, DfID, and JICA). He is pretty familiar with public health, health technology and health services system in the public sector from the grass-roots (community) level through the subdistrict (Upazila Health Complex), district (hospital) and national level healthcare facilities including the institutions of specialized care and education facilities, and regulatory bodies in Bangladesh. He is conversant with technical knowledge of health linkages with climate change, social and environmental determinants of health, One Health, Planetary Health, and climate change mitigation and adaptation actions. Thus, his contributions spread over public health services, academia, training and research through multiple affiliations and portfolios.
Currently, Dr. Aftab serves as the Chairperson of the Public Health Foundation, in Bangladesh, where his leadership continues to drive innovative solutions for public health challenges. His work has been widely recognized, with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and contributions to policy development, research, and health education.
